Terrific Taylors- A Design Journey

What is it like to work with an interior designer?  We love scrolling through beautiful before & after pictures, enjoying designers’ best work. But how do they actually take a person from inhabiting a space they loathe to relaxing in a space they love? I will l tell you it is not as EASY or as FAST as HGTV would have us to believe.

House design and renovation is a detailed and meticulous process that unfolds and flourishes over time. This process builds from the relationship you have with your designer. Being able to share your wants and desires while knowing that someone is really hearing you allows you to walk on faith. May I take you on a design journey and share the behind the scene process of how I build a design?

What better way to explore the process than to examine a project I recently finished.  The home design for my clients, Theresa & Jerry Taylor was just a joy to complete and turned out fabulous. Get prepared for the unexpected when someone requests, green, navy & yellow all IN THE SAME ROOM. Oh this was such a fun and energetic project.

Theresa is one of Washingtonian Magazine’s top real estate agents for Keller Williams.  She spends her days finding people their dream homes, and now it was time to create hers. After years of staging homes, preparing for the market, she knew exactly what she wanted. Instead of opting for the usual neutral, beige “safe” palette,  she chose bright contrasting pops of color, mixed with bold patterns. Playing, she was not!

The Process: Working with Everly & Monet

Step 1: Developing the Design Scope

What is a design scope? It is a detailed plan outlining everything we are going to do. With a pad & tape measure in hand we walk your house on a mission to determine which rooms you want to tackle and transform.   I hope you are okay with me opening your cabinets &  peeping in your closets. We gain an understanding of all your needs by answering these questions:  How do you live in your home day to day? What do you want your house to be & feel like when you come home at night? I take detailed notes, photos and measurements of each space . Every nook and cranny matters. This data becomes your design scope and what I will deliver at the end day.

Step 2: The Inspirational Meeting

Knowing the clients style is THE most important thing in creating a design. My job is to get into your head and understand your vision. The two-hour inspirational meeting is where that starts. Based on the design scope, I arrive at your house with a bag of fabric samples, paint color fans and wood chips is so exciting. This is your time to feel, touch and see potential components of your design. We review every pin, screenshot & ripped out inspirational image. You get a chance to discover or refine what you like & what you don’t. Stripes not your thing? Chenille makes your skin crawl? This is your time to tell me.

Step 3: Creating the Magic

After I have gotten to know you well, I hunker down in my studio and create the magic. During that time we are developing the floorplan, sourcing furniture, choosing paint and selecting wallpapers.  We are making sure that sizes work, colors are coming together and that the story you want to tell is being told.  Everyday I am checking more things off of the design scope.

I wrote earlier that design requires mutual trust that we understand the overall vision. How will I show you what I’m seeing? We do that through mood boards, 4k renderings and product selections.  Using these tools are important because I want to make sure that you feel confident in what the space is going to look like.

What is a Mood Board?

A mood board is a virtual pin board of all the selected pieces in one place. It is the visual aid that helps you to imagine the look and feel of the space.

What is a 4K Rendering?

A rendering is a photo realistic image of your actual space to scale with a detailed floor plan. It includes furniture pieces similar to the actual goods you will be purchasing. It places colors on walls and all textiles so you can feel like your standing in your actual home.

How are products selected?

Using my trade recourses, I find you that window treatment, perfect furniture, art or decor. I then present to you a couple of options from which to choose. Note: Now, I already know which one I think it’s the best.  I want to see if you agree and to ensure our visions are aligned.

Step 4: The Reveal

There’s a climatic moment on the fixer upper shows when they say,  “Are you ready to see your new house?” You understand all the things that went into that moment. All of the hard work, long hours and back and forth communication was all worth it for the outstanding space you now enjoy.

It is thrilling to see a happy client like Theresa who really loves the space we gave her.  It means so much to me that she is really enjoying her space.

Continue to take this design journey with us. Now that you know the process, let’s take a deeper look into how each space came to be. Stay tuned for more of the full house reveal. Wait till you see the wallpapers!
