How To Achieve A Marvelous Master: Ammerman Reveal

How master is your master? Being in the baby business for so many years, I understand how perfect everything has to be when we welcome a new baby. The hours we spent designing the perfect nursery. Only to see them in the store 8 months later & the baby still hasn’t slept a day in that room:) Ohh the good ole days.

But as moms, so many of us fail to give ourselves that same “Perfect” space. Our room, like our needs, often comes last. Our master bedroom is the last place to get the master treatment:) But when the Zoom calls have ended & the last meal made, we seriously need a place to close the door and just BREATHE.

So I was overjoyed when my long time client Allie Ammerman called me up and said she wanted to invest in her master bedroom. After all these years of looking out after others, I was happy to be able to focus on her and hubby, Matthew. I designed bedding for their children’s nurseries & big girl rooms. And happy to say it’s still going strong, even as she embarks on teenage years!! And I don’t think there was one child born in Allie’s life that didn’t get a personalized monogram Angel Dear Lovie. So this one was for her.

When making a room of your own, no more left over pieces from the previous homes, or beautiful hand me downs long past their gratitude phase. We need a room designed with intention. A room designed with thought to midnight readers and deep sleepers. Filled with things that are important and meaningful to you. A room that tucks you in at night & bright-fully awakens you during the day.

These are all the things that I take into consideration when I am designing a master bedroom for clients. After really assessing their needs, I spend hours becoming one with their taste & preferences. My Pinterest boards overflowth. This is how I make sure they really get what they want. During our deep dive inspirational meetings, I bring oh so many samples for them to feel & touch. Unlike the living or dining room, this is the room where you need to be the most relaxed. How is the rug going to feel under your barefoot in the morning? When you prop yourself up in bed, what will your head lean against? How will the linens feel against your skin.  These are the factors that matter.

Allie & Matthew loved their refreshing yellow walls so we incorporated that into the design. I made sure to add weight & a little masculinity by bringing in rich heavy navy pieces. I just love the grasscloth texture of the pieces. Although, we LOVE gold these days. I thought more of an antique brass finish would add warmth  in the hardware, but still keep us fresh, with a little trend.

But really its all about the bed & its details. For a room of this size, a large headboard was perfect. I love the light blue tweed with the weave of darker & lighter tones. Adding the wings to the side, gave it more presence, which is really highlighted by contrasting the welt in a rich navy velvet.  It really shines on the tufted ottoman. And choosing linens with an unexpected abstract pattern was our big modern push. Allie loves her cheerful colors, playing back to the brightness of the walls.

Making spaces purposeful is essential in design. Allie is a big reader. So although everything maybe on a Kindle these days, it doesn’t mean we don’t need a cozy oversized chair to cuddle into. A velvety ottoman & a plush rug for your feet makes this the perfect reading nook.

A couple of finishing touches really brought the room together. We commissioned custom art from the fabulous Deeann Rieves, a contemporary artist working with mixed media, acrylic, and abstraction. She even uses a sewing technique called free-motion that embroiders on top of painted papers. Super cool! The way she wrapped it was art enough. With personal handwritten notes to me & Allie. LOVE!!

Then a little signature Dana styling. My famous book stacks that represent a little about the couple, with a special stack on watch collecting for Matthew. And lastly, adding in the mementoes that really mean something to them, like the Limoges collectibles. I made sure to scatter them throughout the room.

Allie & Matthew’s master bedroom really came together. We were able to achieve the look & feel they both wanted. And at the end of the day, they both love their new space. It really fits them as a super cute, lovie dovie couple, 20 years later. Let’s hope the room helps bring them another 20 more.

Remember, your home is important.
